A garden pond needs remarkably little intervention once established — most of the damage done to one happens from over-managing it, not under-managing it.
A well-balanced pond largely looks after itself — the right mix of oxygenating, marginal and floating plants keeps the water clear without much intervention, and most problems trace back to too much clearing and tidying rather than too little. The lightest possible touch, at the right time of year, does more for both water quality and the wildlife using it than a constant maintenance schedule ever would.

Divide and thin vigorous oxygenating and marginal plants as growth restarts, before they crowd the water out.
- Job June – August
Rake out blanketweed and duckweed by hand regularly through summer rather than reaching for chemical treatments, which can harm wildlife.

Net the surface before leaves start falling in earnest — decomposing leaves foul the water and starve it of oxygen over winter.
- Protect December – February
Stop the surface freezing solid — float a ball or use a pond heater rather than smashing the ice, which shocks fish and wildlife.
Growing tips & common problems
- Leave a section of the edge unplanted and shallow — it's the easiest way for hedgehogs, birds and other wildlife to get in and out safely.
- Never smash a frozen surface to "let air in" — the shockwave can kill fish and other wildlife. Float a ball on the surface before it freezes instead, or use a proper pond heater.
- Resist clearing out every bit of algae and dead growth every autumn — leaving some acts as valuable shelter for the wildlife overwintering in and around the pond.
