A wildflower meadow is the rare garden feature that rewards doing less — the biggest mistake is feeding or cutting it like a lawn.
A meadow trades the constant upkeep of a lawn for one or two well-timed interventions a year and does more for pollinators than almost anything else you can plant. The trade-off is patience: a newly sown meadow usually looks thin and weedy in its first year, and doesn’t hit its stride until the second or third summer once the wildflowers have properly established against the grass.

Care details
- Job March – August
Leave it uncut through spring and into summer so flowers have time to bloom and set seed — this is the entire point of a meadow, not neglect.
- Protect April – August
Pull up any dock or thistle by hand in the first year or two while the meadow is still establishing itself.

Cut everything back hard in late summer once flowering is over, and rake up and remove all the cuttings.
- Sow In September
Sow wildflower seed (and yellow rattle) into bare, cleared soil in early autumn — this gives seed the cold spell it needs before spring germination.
Growing tips & common problems
- Sow yellow rattle alongside your wildflower mix — it weakens the grass it grows among, which is what stops vigorous grass from crowding out the flowers.
- Never feed a meadow. Rich soil grows lush grass at the expense of flowers, which actually prefer poor, low-fertility ground.
- Always rake up and remove the cuttings after the late-summer cut — left in place, they rot down and fertilise the soil, working against everything else you're trying to do.
