A lawn needs far less attention than the weekly-mow-forever reputation suggests β a handful of well-timed jobs a year does most of the work.
Most lawn problems come from mowing habits, not bad luck β cutting too short, too rarely, or at the wrong time of year does more damage than moss, weeds or a hard winter ever will. A lawn thatβs mown regularly and fed twice a year copes with almost anything the British weather throws at it.

Care details
- Feed March β April
Apply a spring lawn feed once growth is clearly underway, not while it's still dormant.
- Job April β August
Mow regularly, raising the blade height through the driest, hottest weeks of summer.
- Protect September β October
Scarify to pull out thatch and moss, then aerate compacted areas β both work best while the ground is still warm enough for the lawn to recover quickly.
- Job October β November
Give it a final, slightly higher cut before growth stops for winter.
Growing tips & common problems
- Mow little and often as growth speeds up in spring, rather than letting it get long and scalping it back in one go.
- Raise the mower blade height in hot, dry spells β a longer blade shades the soil and keeps the grass greener through drought than a close cut does.
- A flush of moss or a few weeds after winter isn't a crisis β most of it thins out on its own once regular mowing and spring feeding get going.
